Workplace Hazards & the Importance of Identifying Near Misses
Have you ever been in or witnessed a situation where you thought to yourself, “That was a close one” or “I’m lucky nothing serious happened”? If so, that situation is called a near miss and they happen in the workplace, every day. A Near Miss is an unplanned, undesired event that could have resulted in personal injury and/or property damage. Every workplace should prioritize near misses just as much as accidents; They go hand-in-hand. According to the National Safety Council, about 75% of all accidents are preceded by one or more near misses. This makes a near miss just as important as an accident and being able to identify near misses becomes vital.
It is the employer’s responsibility to train their employees on job related safety standards. Encouraging workers to ask questions and report incidents will help identify near misses and reduce accidents. For the employee, it is their responsibility to follow the safety guidelines put in place by the employer. Being an active safety participant will create a strong culture focused on safety, eliminating careless near misses.
